A weekly column in which Jake gives short blurbs about the comics he’s picked up that week. Reviewed in the order read, which varies but generally by increasing anticipation. Disclaimer: he knows very little about art, at least not enough to considerably honor such tremendous undertakings, so…yeh, there’s that.
Less of a list this week and more of a single item so…
The Pull Item #1…nah.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4
Writer: Ryan North
Art: Erica Henderson; Chris Giarrusso
Color Art: Rico Renzi
Letters and Production: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Honestly, the cover should tell you all you need to know about this comic, from the set-up to the tone. North is at his zaniest and funniest as Squirrel Girl and her sidekick Tippy-Toe confronts Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, on the moon before he can destroy the Earth. The series has been building to this conflict from the first issue and boy does it deliver. From the opening page to the epilogue, the issue is a smile a panel, if not a hearty chuckle. Henderson and Renzi manage to not only keep up with North’s wacky script, but also enhance it, expertly delivering the comedy through both expressions and physical actions, a notoriously hard thing to do. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is pure fun, and one I hope continues after Secret Wars.
